For relationships, transitions

and retirement

Life coaches help people deal with issues in their life, providing the personal attention needed by most of us to figure out what direction to go to find solutions, then help us keep on track until we get there.

This is not the same as what psychologists do, with their emphasis on analysis and therapy. Life coaches simply assist us with determining and achieving personal goals, with an emphasis on having something good happen for you in the real world.

Life coaching grew out of executive coaching in businesses, where top fees were paid to help company leaders get past issues that might keep them from realizing their full potential. I was fortunate to receive some of that coaching from Farr & Associates in North Carolina during the 1980s. The truth be told, I was not looking forward to doing it because of poor earlier experiences with people trying to tell me what to do. Once I realized coaching was nothing like that, I started to relax, and good things began to happen. The experiences I had then have continued to produce benefits all the way to the present day.

There are a number of profesional coaching organizations that work to maintain appropriately high standards among their members, including the International Association of Coaching (IAC), the International Coach Federation (ICF), and the International Coaching Council (ICC).

Life coaches may have strengths in different areas, such as matters of health, relationships, career, transitions, retirement, or simply figuring out what to do next to build a better life for yourself. In general, coaches are willing to talk with you about whether the two of you would be a good fit for each other, and could accomplish something that would leave you glad you had the experience.

Here are some sources of life coaches, with the understanding that it is not possible to guarantee that each person on every list would be good for you. More reasonably, you need to check them out and become satisfied that they can help you and be a good fit.

"Bridge Over Troubled Water"

by Simon and Garfunkel

When you're weary, feeling small,

When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all;

I'm on your side, when times get rough

And friends just can't be found,
Like a bridge over troubled water

I will lay me down.

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will lay me down

When you're down and out,

When you're on the street,

When evening falls so hard

I will comfort you.

I'll take your part,

When darkness comes

And pains is all around,

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will lay me down.

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will lay me down

Sail on silver girl, sail on by.

Your time has come to shine.

All your dreams are on their way.

See how they shine.

If you need a friend

I'm sailing right behind.

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will ease your mind.

Like a bridge over troubled water

I will ease your mind
